Lots of signs points to an explosive offensive season, particularly from the passing game, for the Cowboys. Mason Rudolph is back for another season after leading the Cowboys into averaging 353.2 passing yards per game—good for seventh in the nation—in 2015.  Rudolph will have the benefit of having someone like James Washington downfield.

Washington was among the best receivers in the Big 12 in 2015, when he caught 1,087 yards and 10 touchdowns. Rudolph, meanwhile, was third in the conference with 290.0 passing yards per outing.

Rudolph should feel more comfortable operating in the pocket this year with the offensive line returning all five starters from last season.

Team Weaknesses

While the passing attack was prolific for the Cowboys last season, their running game was anemic compared to other programs in the Big 12. Oklahoma State had the second fewest rushing yards per game in the conference last year with 126.85. A more experienced offensive line, however, should help the Cowboys get better in that department.

Apart from the questionable running game, the Cowboys are also starting at a defensive unit that will no longer have All-American end Emmanuel Ogbah. Ogbah’s absence doesn’t bode well for the Cowboys’ defense that allowed 50.3 points in the last three games of last season.

2015 Team Stats

Category Stat (Rank)
Points per game 40.2 (#7)
Passing yards per game 348.1 (#7)
Rushing yards per game 35.4 (#95)
Scoring defense 32.3 (#90)

Writer’s Prediction

Oklahoma State, which is +8,000 to win the national title, ends the regular season with an 8-4 record.
