Betting on the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles (+8)
Record: 17-10 Overall / 10-5 Conference
Oral Roberts scored what is easily the biggest upset of the 2021 March Madness so far when the Golden Eagles eliminated No. 2 seed Ohio State Buckeyes with a 75-72 win on Friday in the first round. Guard Max Abmas made sure people know who he is by almost single-handedly torching the Buckeyes with 29 points, five rebounds, and three assists in 45 minutes of action. There could be some fatigue that could set in for him after a zero minutes-rest game, but we’re not talking about an NBA star in his mid-30s here. Abmas and forward Kevin Obanor (30 points, 11 rebounds) will be the focal points again of the Golden Eagles’ offense against the Gators, who can be unpredictable with regards to what kind of game they will show up with. Oral Roberts is the sharpest team on the free-throw line in the nation, as the team is sinking 82.4 percent of their shots from the charity stripe, so Florida will have to play honest defense on this Golden Eagles team that is also tops in the nation with 10.9 threes per contest. Oral Roberts went 11 of 35 from deep against Ohio State
Betting on the Florida Gators (-8)
Record: 15-9 Overall / 9-7 Conference
Florida survived the first round and is moving onto the next after beating the Virginia Tech Hokies via overtime, 75-70. The Gators would have likely packed their bags if not for the astounding performance of 6-11 junior center Colin Castleton, who balled out and produced 19 points, 14 rebounds, and three blocks in 43 minutes. Tre Mann, meanwhile, had 14 points and three 3-pointers, including one that he made in the clutch. The Gators will come into the second round with better respect for Oral Roberts than what Ohio State showed with their lackadaisical play in the first round. Mann and Castleton will have to establish the tone early and not allow the Golden Eagles to gather enough momentum, and the Gators can do that by taking away Oral Roberts’ options inside the arc and at the rim. The Gators are fourth in the nation with 5.4 blocks per game and seventh with a 9.3 defensive block percentage.
The over is 2-0 in Florida’s last two games overall.
Writer’s Prediction
Florida wins, 77-71.
