The Valspar Championship is one of the youngest events in the PGA TOUR. It’s only 21 years old, having started in 2000 when it was still known as the Tampa Bay Classic. That year, John Huston won the tournament and took home $432,000, the biggest cut of the $2.4 million purse. The following year, organizers had to postpone the event because of the September 11 attacks. It returned in 2002, this time known as the Tampa Bay Classic presented by John Buick. It changed its name again in 2003 to Chrysler Championship, which would be the way until 2006. From 2007 to 2008, the tournament was known as the PODS Championship before transitioning to the Transitions Championship in 2009. Then in 2013, the event became the Tampa Bay Championship presented by EverBank. That didn’t last long, as, in 2014, the Valspar Championship came to be, which was also the first time in the tournament’s history that the winning player got $1 million. Kevin Na won $1.026 million by topping the field that year.
