The Wells Fargo Championship is a relatively young stop of the PGA TOUR. This event traces its roots to 2003 when it was still known as the Wachovia Championship. That year, David Toms won by a couple of strokes, which earned him a prize of $1.008 million from the $5.6 million purse. In 2009, the tournament got renamed Quail Hollow Championship with the purse hitting $6.5 million. The Wells Fargo Championship as we know now started in 2011 with a purse of $6.5 million. The purse improved to $6.7 million in 2013 then got increased by $200,000 in each of the following years (except in 2020). Rory McIlroy is the only multi-winner of this tournament, having topped the Quail Hollow Championship in 2010 and the Wells Fargo Championship in 2015, pocketing $1.17 million and $1.278 million, respectively.
