The Wyndham Championship traces its roots to the late 1930s. Originally known as the Greater Greensboro Open, the purse for the tournament when it started in 1938 was only $5,000. Sam Snead won the inaugural tournament with an 11-under par 271 to take home the $1,200 share for the winner. Fast forward to 1988, the tournament changed its name to KMart Greater Greensboro Open. That year, the purse had risen to $1 million for the first time in the tournament’s history. Sandy Lyle won the 1988 edition of the tournament and took home a then-record $180,000. The tournament became known as the Wyndham Championship starting in 2007 when Brandt Snedeker won at Forest Oaks and pocketed $900,000 out of the $5 million purse. Last year, Jim Herman won the Wyndham Championship to take home $1.152 million ($6.4 million purse).
