Betting on the Philadelphia Phillies (+160)

Starting for Philadelphia in this series finale is Jake Thompson (3-5, 5.62 ERA). He won his second straight decision Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox, allowing three runs on four hits in five innings of action. Thompson has been pitching well of late, posting a 2.97 ERA over his last five starts. He has surrendered just 10 earned runs in 30.1 innings during this stretch.

Thompson can’t do it all alone, though, and he needs the Phillies offense to pick up the scoring slack as well. They have scored a total of 23 runs in this series thus far. Expected to lead the Philadelphia attack tonight is the sizzling Tommy Joseph. The first baseman is 9-of-22 over his last seven games with two homers and nine RBIs. Joseph has also drawn four walks during this span. He is 1-of-3 in his career against Mets starter Robert Gsellman. Another guy who’s hitting well right now for Philadelphia is Odubel Herrera. He is batting .429 over his last seven games with two homers and five RBIs.

Betting on the New York Mets (-180)

The New York Mets had their two-game winning streak snapped on Saturday with a gut-wrenching 10-8 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. Sean Gilmartin flopped in his emergency start, allowing five runs on four hits in just 0.2 innings of action. It was the shortest non-injury start by a Mets pitcher this campaign. With the loss, the Mets dropped into a two-way tie for first place in the NL wild-card standings with the San Francisco Giants. Both teams are carding similar 82-73 records with just seven games remaining this season.

With the Mets’ playoff hopes now hanging in the balance, the pressure is on starting pitcher Robert Gsellman (2-2, 3.13 ERA) to deliver an excellent performance today. He was solid in his last start, surrendering just two runs on five hits in 5.1 innings of action against the Atlanta Braves. Unfortunately for Gsellman, he didn’t get enough run support as the Mets lost that ballgame, 5-4. The Mets have now lost in each of Gsellman’s last two starts.

One hitter who’s struggling mightily right now for the Mets is Yoenis Cespedes. He is batting just .259 (7-of-27) over his last eight games with no homers and two RBIs. It’s paramount for the Mets that Cespedes provide some support to the red-hot Asdrubal Cabrera who has two homers and six RBIs in his last eight outings.

Writer’s Prediction

New York (-180) wins, 6-4.
