Betting on the Philadelphia Phillies (-1.5)

Regular Season Record: 46-40

Aaron Nola gets the starting duties for the Phillies in the final game of this four-game series against the Cardinals. So far this season, Nola has a 5-6 record and a 3.15 ERA along with a 0.93 WHIP. While Nola failed to get a win in his last start, which was when he allowed 3 earned runs on 7 hits in a 3-2 home loss to the Washington Nationals on July 6, the Phillies are still 5-2 in his past five starts – thanks in large party to Nola’s huge June. Last month, Nola went just 3-1 with a 2.51 ERA in six starts. The Phillies’ offense, meanwhile, is pretty stout, ranking inside the top 11 overall in wOBA and WRC+.

Betting on the St. Louis Cardinals (+1.5)

Regular Season Record: 46-42

The Cardinals will counter Nola with Miles Mikolas, who is searching for this first win of the month. Mikolas is 5-7 with a 2.72 ERA and 0.99 WHIP to date this year, so he’s not someone to sleep on. He picked up a loss on July 1 on the road against the Phillies when he allowed just 2 earned runs on 6 hits in 5.1 innings of a 5-3 defeat, but he was hardly to blame for that. The Cardinals’ offense has struggled of late and he will be looking for better run support this time around. St. Louis’ bats may have gone sour over the past several games, but it is still not a smart idea to underestimate what the likes of Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado could d with their bats. Goldy has been a beast this season, posting a .340 batting average and a .423 on-base percentage on the year.

Writer’s Prediction

The Cardinals win, 5-4.
