Betting on the Pittsburgh Steelers (-4)
Even with less animosity between the two bloodthirsty AFC North rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers once again defeated the Cincinnati Bengals, 24-16, this past Sunday. This time around, the Steelers took to the ground instead of the air to deal the most damage to the Bengals. 33-year-old DeAngelo Williams had a career-high 34 carries and ran for 94 yards. He also hauled in a receiving touchdown to keep Pittsburgh’s offense as potent as last year’s while star running back Le’Veon Bell remains suspended for the first three weeks of the season.
However, big-armed quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had somewhat of a rough afternoon, as he went 19-for-37 passing with two interceptions. He still ended up with 259 passing yards and three TDs, though, and he might’ve found a new weapon downfield in the process. Young Sammie Coates connected with Big Ben on massive 53- and 44-yard plays, giving the second-year wideout a staggering average of 38.3 yards per catch for the season.
Even the defense is humming along well, having limited each of its first two opponents of the season to just 16 points. Having said that, the Steelers are as well-rounded a team as they come early on this season, which could spell trouble for the resurgent Eagles this coming Sunday. On top of that, the Steelers are 4-2 in their last six road contests (3-1-2 ATS), so they definitely won’t enter their neighboring team’s front yard without putting up a good fight.
Betting on the Philadelphia Eagles (+4)
2016’s second-overall draft pick Carson Wentz continued to amaze the league by winning his second NFL game in as many starts this Monday night, trumping the visiting Chicago Bears handily, 29-14.
Wentz went 21-of-34 for 190 passing yards and a touchdown, More importantly, he remained turnover-free for his first couple of outings as a pro. While Wentz’s passing numbers aren’t as gaudy, Philly is still putting up points on the board with a balanced offensive attack and a sound defense. The Eagles offense has held possession of the ball an average of 37 minutes this season, and with the D already generating four takeaways against in the first two games.
Take note, though, that their first two opponents this season were perennially dysfunctional teams in the Bears and the Browns. Pittsburgh will prove to be a huge spike in level of competition, so Philadelphia cannot rest on its laurels just yet. At least they’ve hung in well with their fellow Pennsylvanians, having gone 5-3 (SU/ATS) against the Steelers since 1988.
Writer’s Prediction
The Steelers (-4) continue their offensive barrage, 36-22.
