Betting on the Pittsburgh Steelers (-2.5)
It’s been eight years since the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Washington Redskins squared off in the regular season, and it was the Steelers who last came out victorious in what also happened to be a Monday Night Football showdown. And as far as it looks this moment, the Terrible Towels may paint the nation’s Capital yellow once more.In fact, Pittsburgh has won the last five contests against Washington. This time out, the boys from Steel City will be powered by the lethal combination of Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown. The two combined for over 1,800 yards and a total of 11 touchdowns last season for a Pittsburgh team that averaged 287.7 passing yards (third in the NFL) and 26.4 points (fourth) per game.
Roethlisberger and Brown better light up the scoreboard because their team is missing two key components this Monday: star running back Le’Veon Bell (four-week suspension) and wideout Martavis Bryant (season-long ban). Then again, the Steelers also have a rather formidable defense in tow, one that allowed less than 20 yards per contest (19.9 – 11th best in the league) to give the Redskins all sorts of fits on both sides of the ball in their home opener.
Betting on the Washington Redskins (-2.5)
For the Washington Redskins, their campaign will be off to a tough start. Skeptics will definitely be ready to pounce on them this year, especially considering the fact that they failed to beat a team with a winning record the previous season en route to a mediocre 7-9 record with an unlikely playoff berth thanks to the equally pathetic competition in the NFC East.
For the ‘Skins to give their home fans an optimistic beginning, breakout QB Kirk Cousins must continue to lead his team to new heights. Cousins threw for over 4,100 yards and 29 touchdowns last season, and together with tight end Jordan Reed (11 TDs – second-most amongst all tight ends) gave much life to this once-disenchanted franchise. And with veteran wideout DeSean Jackson in a contract year, Washington’s passing game could be threatening indeed.
However, what might be the Redskins’ undoing is their defense. They gave up the sixth-most offensive yardage to the opposition last year at a little over 380 yards per contest, and they did little to fix this problem during the offseason. As such, the Steelers might be teeing off all Monday afternoon on this unit in a shootout that the Redskins would rather not be in.
