Betting on Roger Federer (-550)

After a shaky start to the tournament, Roger Federer has gotten his groove back. The 19-time Grand Slam champion booked a place in the quarterfinals of the 2017 US Open with a convincing 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 win over Philipp Kohlschreiber. Federer needed just one hour and 49 minutes to eliminate the no. 33 seed and in the process secured a mouth-watering last-eight clash with Juan Martin del Potro.

Wednesday’s matchup will be a rematch of their titanic showdown in the 2009 US Open final. Federer’s eager to avenge that loss to del Potro which ended his five-year reign as champion. For the Swiss maestro to get his revenge, he needs to continue his excellent play on the service end. He won 88 percent of his first serve points in the win against Kohlschreiber. Even Federer’s second serves were deadly against the German as he won 73 percent of his points in that department.

One major concern for Federer heading into his clash with Del Potro is his back problem. He asked for a medical timeout after the second set against Kohlschreiber when he felt the tightening of a muscle at the back of the top of his left leg. Federer tweaked his back during a match in August and looked far from comfortable in his five-set wins against Frances Tiafoe and Mikhail Youzhny in the first two rounds of this year’s US Open.

Betting on Juan Martin del Potro (+375)

There’s something about New York that brings the best out of Juan Martin del Potro. Buoyed by a partisan crowd, the Argentinian battled back from two sets down to stun sixth seed Dominic Thiem, 1-6, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (1), 6-4, in the fourth round on Monday. Del Potro overcame sickness and two match points to seal a quarterfinal date with the great Roger Federer.

Yes, he’s just 5-16 in his career against Federer but as he we have mentioned earlier, one of Delpo’s victories came at the hallowed courts of Flushing Meadows. Del Potro stunned the Swiss legend in five sets in the final eight years ago, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Del Potro’s eager to make up for lost time after missing a total of 10 Grand Slam tournaments since that 2009 triumph due to four wrist surgeries.

He looks to be back to his best and Thiem definitely found that out on Monday. Displaying the resiliency that made him a fan favorite on the ATP Tour, del Potro blasted 31 winners and won 64 percent of his first serve points against Thiem. Del Potro will need to lessen his miscues, though, if he is to upset Federer. He committed a whopping 59 unforced errors in the win against Thiem.
