Three Reasons Why Rory McIlroy Will Win the 2016 British Open

Defending Open Champion*

Rory McIlroy isn’t really the reigning 2015 British Open champion, but he probably believes that he still is.

Technically, the World No. 4 golfer is defending the Open Championship title that he won in 2014, as he had to sit out last year’s installment of the tournament due to an ankle injury (hence the asterisk on our sub-header above).

McIlroy’s victory a couple of years ago at Merseryside was no fluke either, as he also had a fantastic T3 finish in the 2010 edition of The Open. No wonder the oddsmakers have still justifiably priced him at +900 to win his second British Open title in three years.

The Calm after the Storm

With early weather forecasts predicting rain over Ayreshire throughout the course of this year’s tournament, McIlroy may be the only one glad to hear about the possibility of wetter conditions.

Just this past May, the Northern Irishman won his first title of the year at the European Tour’s Irish Open, which also saw pretty heavy downpour during the event. And yet, Rory still won the tournament impressively by three strokes in front of his fellow country lads.

Rain or shine, U.S. or Europe… McIlroy is never fazed by changes in his environment.

Back to His Best?

We mentioned earlier that McIlroy just won his first title of 2016, but that tournament was on the European Tour level. Yet despite not being able to win one on the PGA Tour this year, his results from the top tier of professional golf have been superb nonetheless.

In 12 tournaments this season, Rory has five top-10 finishes to just two cuts, with four of those top-10 finishes coming from his last five starts prior to being uncharacteristically cut from the U.S. Open in mid-June.

McIlroy’s season has had quite a mixed bag of results, but there’s certainly more good than bad in support of his bounce-back campaign.

Writer’s Prediction

The luck of the Irish isn’t enough to propel McIlroy (+900) to victory as he finishes on the cusp of the top 10.
