Betting on the San Diego Chargers (+5)
It looks like the Chargers’ luck is finally turning. San Diego won a close affair for the second game running on Sunday, eking past Atlanta in an overtime thriller, 33-30. Josh Lambo hit the game-winning 42-yard field goal in the extra period to give the Chargers their first road victory of the season. With the win, the Chargers improved to 3-4 as they moved to within two games of the AFC West-leading Oakland Raiders.
They will look to sustain the momentum of that huge win when they lock horns with the Denver Broncos this coming Sunday. For the Chargers to stretch their unbeaten run even further, they will need to get another stellar performance from quarterback Philip Rivers. He completed 27 of 44 passes for 371 yards and a touchdown with one interception in the win against the Falcons. Rivers is sixth in the NFL in the passing department this season, averaging 288.3 yards per game.
With their passing game in full flow, Melvin Gordon was able to wreak havoc on the ground for San Diego against Atlanta. He ran for 68 yards and two scores and added a 5-yard scoring catch early in the fourth quarter to provide the offensive spark for the Chargers. That comes on the heels of his 94 rushing-yard performance against the Broncos in Week 5.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t San Diego’s offense that took center stage in that win against Denver but its superb defense. The Chargers held the Broncos to just 304 total yards in that contest as they ended a two-year drought against the AFC West. They will need to replicate that defensive performance against a Denver side that’s averaging 23.9 points per game this season, 13th in the NFL.
The Chargers are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 road games. They are pegged at +5,000 to win the Super Bowl this season.
Betting on the Denver Broncos (-5)
The Denver Broncos finally snapped their two-game losing streak with a resounding 27-9 victory over the Houston Texans on Monday. It was a fantastic win by the Broncos who are now tied with the Oakland Raiders at the top of the AFC West with nine games remaining in the season. Leading the way for Denver in this all-important victory were running backs C.J. Anderson and Devontae Booker. They energized the Broncos’ sputtering ground game, rushing for a combined 200 yards and two scores against the Texans.
Their excellent play will serve Denver in good stead ahead of its Sunday clash with San Diego. The Broncos will fancy their chances in this ballgame as they have fared extremely well at home this season. They are 3-1 at Sports Authority Field this year. For the Broncos to continue their home dominance this coming weekend, they will need to continue their excellent play on the defensive end.
Denver’s defense was exceptional on Monday, holding former quarterback Brock Osweiler to just 131 passing yards. The Broncos are third in the NFL in total defense, allowing just 291.6 total yards per game this season. They will need to apply that same kind of defensive pressure against San Diego QB Philip Rivers who has already thrown 13 touchdowns this season, sixth-most in the NFL.
The Broncos are 5-5 SU and 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 home games against the Chargers. Denver is pegged at +1,400 to retain its Super Bowl title this season.
Writer’s Prediction
