Betting on the Seattle Mariners (20-27)
Starting for Seattle in the final game of this three-game set is Ariel Miranda (3-2, 4.28 ERA). The lefty is coming off his best start of the season, holding the Chicago White Sox to just one run over seven innings with a career-high nine strikeouts. The 28-year-old Cuban has been terrific over his last two outings, allowing just two earned runs over 12 frames while posting a fantastic 17:5 K:BB ratio.
That being said, Miranda will need all the help he can get against a Washington team that’s packed with offensive talent from top to bottom. One guy who needs to get his act together is Nelson Cruz. The Mariners DH is mired in a deep slump, nabbing just two hits in his last 21 at-bats. Cruz still has that major league power, however, as he has drilled four homers in his last 12 games. He has already racked up 14 RBIs in the month of May.
The Mariners are 0-6 in their last six road games.
Betting on the Washington Nationals (28-17)
There’s just no stopping Washington right now. The Nationals extended their winning streak to three games with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday. Anthony Rendon continued his torrid hitting, blasting yet another home run in the first inning of that contest. He now has three homers and eight RBIs in this interleague series.
Tasked to keep the momentum going today is starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez (3-1, 2.86 ERA). He allowed four runs over 5.2 innings in a no-decision Friday against the Atlanta Braves. Thursday’s meeting will be a reunion of sorts for Gonzalez as he used to face Seattle regularly during his earlier stint with Oakland. The last of Gonzalez’s 10 starts against the Mariners came in September 2011, when he threw eight scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts. One thing the lefty must address this coming afternoon is his alarming walk rate. The southpaw has issued at least three walks in each of his last seven starts.
The Nationals are 8-2 in their last 10 home games.
