Betting on Serena Williams (-200)
Serena Williams’ bid for a record seventh Australian Open crown remains right on track after beating Barbora Strycova, 7-5, 6-4 in the fourth round on Monday. With the victory, the American booked a place in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the 11th time in her storied career. Playing in front of a packed house at Rod Laver Arena, Serena displayed the immense power that made her the finest player of her generation. She outhit Strycova in the winners department, 28-9. In this tournament thus far, Serena is averaging a whopping 27.5 winners per match. She also has recorded 31 aces in this year’s Australian Open – good for second in the free-points table.
Next up for Williams is a final eight clash with Johanna Konta. This will be the first meeting between Serena and Konta in the WTA Tour. For Williams to record the all-important victory this coming Wednesday, she needs to bring her aggressive style and continue her outstanding net play in the quarterfinals. She won 15 of her 24 net points against Strycova in the fourth round. Williams has won 79 percent (44-of-56) of her total net points in this year’s Australian Open thus far.
Williams is 8-2 in her last 10 matches.
Betting on Johanna Konta (+160)
Johanna Konta booked a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2017 Australian Open with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 win over Ekaterina Makarova on Monday. It was a brilliant showing from Konta, who needed just 68 minutes to outlast the Russian. With the victory, is through to the last eight of the Australian Open for the second year running. She will face her toughest test to date, however, this coming Tuesday when she squares off with the legendary Serena Williams in the quarterfinals. Serena has been on a tear in this tournament, winning 17 of her last 18 Australian Open matches.
For Konta to record a major upset in the next round, she will need her return play to be immaculate against the hard-serving Williams. She won 50 percent of her receiving points in the fourth round against Makarova with Konta converting four of her five break point opportunities. That being said, Konta has to be aggressive right from the get-go for her to stand a chance against Williams. She will need to put pressure on the world no. 2 and she can do that by putting her first serves in play. Konta won 80 percent of her first serve points against Makarova on Monday.
Konta is 9-0 in her last nine matches.
