Betting on Serena Williams (-1,400)
Serena Williams’ bid for a record 23rd Grand Slam title remains right on track after beating Lucie Safarova, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round on Thursday. With the victory, the world no. 2 booked a place in the round-of-32 of the Australian Open for the 16th time in her career. Playing on Rod Laver Arena, Serena displayed the ruthless power that made her the best player in the women’s game today. She outhit Safarova in the winners department, 35-24. In this tournament thus far, Serena is averaging a whopping 32.5 winners per match. She also has recorded 23 aces in this year’s Australian Open – good for second in the free-points table.
Waiting in the next round for Williams is Nicole Gibbs. Serena will fancy her chances in this third-round clash as she has fared extremely well against Gibbs in the past. Williams destroyed Gibbs, 6-2, 6-1, in their lone meeting at the Stanford tournament back in 2012. For Williams to extend her dominance against Gibbs, she needs to continue her excellent net play. Serena won 91 percent (10-of-11) of her net points against Safarova in the second round.
Williams is 8-2 in her last 10 matches.
Betting on Nicole Gibbs (+750)
Nicole Gibbs booked a place in the third round of the 2017 Australian Open with a convincing 6-4, 6-1 win over Irina Falconi on Thursday. It was a brilliant showing from Gibbs, who needed just 77 minutes to outlast the gutsy American. With the victory, Gibbs is through to the third round of the Australian Open for the first time in her young career. However, she will face her toughest test to date when she squares off with Serena Williams in the round of 32. Williams has been on a tear here in the Australian Open, winning six of the last 14 Grand Slam tournaments staged Down Under.
For Gibbs to record a major shock in the next round, she needs her receiving game to be firing on all cylinders this coming Saturday. She won 56 percent of her receiving points against Falconi with Gibbs converting six of her 18 break point opportunities in the second round. Gibbs also needs to limit her miscues if she is to upset the mighty Williams. She committed a whopping 25 unforced errors in the win against Falconi. That simply won’t do against a world-class player like Williams who has yet to lose a set in this event thus far.
Gibbs is 4-6 in her last 10 matches.
