Betting on Sloane Stephens (-190)
Sloane Stephens’ resurgence continued on Friday with a resounding 6-2, 6-4 victory over Ashleigh Barty in the third round of the 2017 US Open. Stephens needed just one hour and 17 minutes to secure the straight-sets win and in the process advanced to the fourth round in Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2013. Stephens has been on a tear since returning from a lengthy injury layoff, recording semis results at the Rogers Cup in Toronto and the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.
Stephens will look to keep the momentum going when she locks horns with Julia Goerges in the round of 16 this coming Saturday. The American will fancy her chances of doing just that as she has fared extremely well against Goerges in the past. Stephens is 4-1 in her career against Goerges with all four of those victories coming on the hard courts. Stephens’ lone loss to Goerges came on clay which is her least favorite surface.
For Stephens to extend her dominance against Goerges, she needs to continue her strong return play in the fourth round. Stephens won 55 percent of her receiving points against Barty with the world No. 83 converting six of her nine break point opportunities.
Betting on Julia Goerges (+155)
The dream lives on for Julia Goerges. The No. 30 seed moved into the fourth round of the 2017 US Open with a comprehensive 6-3, 6-3 win over Aleksandra Krunic on Friday. It was a fantastic performance by Goerges who needed just one hour and 13 minutes to record the straight-sets victory. With the win, Goerges reached the last 16 at Flushing Meadows for the first time in her career.
Just like in her previous match against Zheng, Goerges’ serve was the main difference once again. She won 84 percent of her first serve points against Krunic. Goerges also blasted a whopping 27 winners in that third-round contest, almost doubling her unforced error count. Fognini has been sensational in this year’s US Open as she has yet to drop a set in her opening three matches, losing only a total of seven games during that span.
Goerges will start as the underdog against Stephens, but the 28-year-old German could beat the hometown favorite if she maintains the excellence that saw her reach three WTA finals this year. Goerges will be eager to avenge her quarterfinal defeat to Stephens just last week in Cincinnati. She lost in straight sets in that encounter, 6-1, 7-6 (3).
