Betting on the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (7-5 Overall / 5-3 Conference)

Finished third in the Conference USA West division, the Golden Eagles still managed to earn a bowl game ticked despite ending the regular season by losing two games in a row. After losing to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Nov. 24 (28-10), the Golden Eagles were toppled by the Florida Atlantic Owls (34-17) on Nov. 30. An entire month of practice and preparation should have the Golden Eagles’ spirits up again following that disappointing defeat at the hands of the Owls. Southern Mississippi’s strength lies mostly in its defense that is third in the Conference USA with the team allowing just 350.3 total yards per game. The Golden Eagles are fifth in the conference with 27.8 points surrendered per contest. They are particularly tough to get past through on the ground, as they rank 15th in the nation with just 114.7 rushing yards allowed per game, which doesn’t sound too good for Tulane, which leans on its run-heavy attack mostly on offense.

The under is 5-0 in the Golden Eagles’ last five games.

Betting on the Tulane Green Wave (6-6 Overall / 3-5 Conference)

Like the Golden Eagles, Tulane is headed to the Armed Forces Bowl limping, as they have lost all of their last three games — a span that saw them give up an average of 33.3 points. However, the Green Wave had to deal with decent opponents in those losses namely, the Temple Owls, the UCF Knights, and the SMU Mustangs. The Golden Eagles are, on paper, an easier opponent than those aforementioned teams, so expect Tulane to be unfazed in their meeting with Southern Mississippi. After all, the Green Wave are the favorite in this matchup. Leading the Green Wave is dual-threat quarterback Justin McMillan, who leads the team in both passing and rushing, McMillan has 2,299 passing yards and 14 touchdowns against 10 interceptions and 704 rushing yards to go with 12 rushing scores. Knowing that the Golden Eagles present a stout defense against the run, McMillan may have to open things up through the air early in the game, which means establishing a connection right away with Darnell Mooney and Jalen McCleskey, who are the top two receivers of the Green Wave.

Tulane, which is 11th in the nation with 245.5 rushing yards per game, is 7-3 against the spread (ATS) in their last 10 outings.

Writer’s Prediction

Tulane wins, 28-23.
