Betting on the St. Louis Cardinals (+170)

250x130-250FREE-6-16-16

Mike Leake is having a rough time of late and he’ll be looking to notch his first win in three starts when he makes an appearance later tonight against Chicago. Leake is coming off a six-inning outing on August 9, allowing three earned runs on six hits, while issuing four walks in a 7-4 loss to Cincinnati.

Leake has allowed at least three earned runs in each of his previous five starts so the Cardinals can’t just rely on the six-year veteran to lead them to victory. St. Louis is going to need its offense to provide some cushion early and hope that it would be enough for Leake. Leake is getting a decent amount of run support this season with 5.18 per nine innings pitched.

Speaking of offense, Brandon Moss is 5-for-16 (.313) with a homer and three RBI in his career opposite Cubs starter, John Lackey. Jhonny Peralta, meanwhile, is 12-for-34 (.353     ) in the same lifetime matchup.

Betting on the Chicago Cubs (+200)

It’s been smooth sailing for the Cubs this month and they’ll be aiming for another victory in the last game of this four-game homestand.

On the mound for the Cubs is John Lackey, who’ll bring a 9-7 record and a 3.56 ERA in 23 starts thus far this season. Lackey has been solid over his last few outings, going 2-0 with a 2.14 ERA in his previous three starts. That includes his outstanding eight-inning appearance in a 5-1 win over the LA Angels on August 9, wherein he yielded just an earned run on three hits while striking out six Halos batters.

Lackey is expecting the Cubs’ offense to behind him in this game. After all, he appears to be spoiled by the 5.22 RS/9 he is receiving this season.

Among the Cubs expected to deliver at the plate tonight is the pair of Anthony Rizzo and Chris Coghlan. Rizzo is 10-for-32 with a couple of blasts against Mike Leake. Rizzo, on the other hand, has read Leake like a book apparently with a 10-for16 line with two home runs and two doubles off the Cardinals starter.
