Betting on Stan Wawrinka (+125)

Stan Wawrinka’s terrific hard court season continues. The World No. 3 is now 20-6 on the surface after ending Juan Martin del Potro’s US Open run, 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. With that win, Wawrinka has now reached his third US Open semifinal in the last four years.

He was unable to progress to the final in his first two semis trips as he lost to Novak Djokovic in 2013 and Roger Federer last year. However, he’ll finally find himself as the higher seed in this matchup with Nishikori. The Swiss holds the 3-2 edge over the Japanese in their five career head-to-head meetings.

Wawrinka’s serve hasn’t been at its best in the tournament, and he’s committing a few too many unforced errors. But he’s been able to get some timely breaks of serve, which have compensated for those shortcomings to his game. He was able to break del Potro’s serve four times and broke Illya Marchenko seven times in their round of 16 matchup.

Betting on Kei Nishikori (-155)

Kei Nishikori is back in the semifinals of the US Open, and he’s done it the hard way. The 2014 US Open finalist edged out World No. 2 Andy Murray in five grueling sets, 1-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, in the quarterfinals. Nishikori has now played 20 out of a possible 25 sets in his five matches in the tournament.

Nishikori made things much tougher for himself by committing 60 unforced errors against Murray. This was coming off his mistake-free match with Ivo Karlovic, which saw him commit just seven unforced errors in three sets.

Nishikori’s serve has been inconsistent in Flushing, but his return game has been there to bail him out. He out-returned one of the top returners in the game by converting 9 of 13 break point opportunities and winning 45 percent of return points against Murray. He’ll need every bit of that excellent return game to counter Wawrinka’s strong serve.

That’s exactly what Nishikori did in the semifinals of the Canadian Masters, their lone meeting of the year, as he ran out a 7-6(6), 6-1 winner. Nishikori also won their 2014 meeting at the US Open quarterfinal, as he outlasted Wawrinka in five grueling sets.

Writer’s Prediction

Nishikori (-155) survives another five-setter as he edges out Wawrinka.
