Betting on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+6.5)
A 1-0 “winning” record may not seem like much, but for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it means a wonderful beginning indeed.Sunday’s 31-24 win over the Atlanta Falcons marked Tampa Bay’s first winning record in four years, with Jameis Winston looking every bit like the Heisman Trophy winner he is. Winston found four different receivers for his TD passes in the victory, going a rather efficient 23-of-33 for 281 yards (albeit with an early interception that he more than made of for later on).
With Tampa Bay’s offense rolling right now, it’s now up its defense to have a better outing this coming Sunday against Arizona’s potent offense. The team failed to generate turnovers from the Falcons, and that’s one concern that it failed to address in the offseason. The Bucs only had 11 interceptions last season – fifth-least in the NFL – and their secondary sure could use some picks to thwart the angry Cards’ own plans in their prolific passing game.
Betting on the Arizona Cardinals (-6.5)
A missed game-winning field goal by Chandler Catanzaro from the 23-21 loss Sunday night has left a sour taste in the Arizona Cardinals’ mouth, especially since it came at the hands of the Brady-less New England Patriots.
Then again, the Cardinals ultimately hung tough and showed a lot of what they were known for the previous season. The lethal combination of Carson Palmer (271 passing yards, two touchdowns), Larry Fitzgerald (81 receiving yards, caught both of Palmer’s scoring passes) and David Johnson (89 rushing yards, one TD) was as electric as ever. Even the defense caused three New England fumbles and recovered two of them.
We’d like to scratch this off as more of a great showing from a tenacious New England club than a downright horrible start for the Cards. As such, we expect them to make the necessary changes and get on the win column against a lesser-experienced Tampa Bay team.
Writer’s Prediction
The Cardinals (-6.5) avenge their Week 1 loss with flair, 31-17.
