Betting on the Tennessee Titans (-2.5)
The Titans will have to wait a while longer to see first-round pick Corey Davis in action this preseason. The rookie wide receiver injured his hamstring in training and will be out for at least a week.
Davis’ absence should give a few more reps to fellow rookie receiver Taywan Taylor, who has garnered some rave reviews during camp. The third-rounder will be battling for snaps in a suddenly crowded Titans receiving corps that now features former Jet Eric Decker, Rishard Matthews, Davis, and Tajae Sharpe.
Reports from camp say quarterback Marcus Mariota looks back to his best after breaking his leg at the tail-end of last season. However, the third-year star shouldn’t get too much time on the field in Week 1 of preseason, which should give more time for backup QBs Matt Cassel and Alex Tanney to get some reps. Second-year back Derrick Henry should also get a handful of the carries in the backfield.
Meanwhile, the battle for the second starting cornerback spot opposite Logan Ryan should be a fierce one. LeShaun Sims and Brice McCain will face some stiff competition from first-round pick Adoree’ Jackson, who is also drawing rave reviews both as a corner and a returner.
Betting on the New York Jets (+2.5)
No one is expecting much from the Jets this year, especially after they telegraphed their intentions to tank during the offseason. However, it’ll still be interesting to see whether Christian Hackenberg can crack his way into the starting QB spot ahead of veteran Josh McCown, who is firmly in pole position at the moment.
The second-year QB hasn’t looked too good during camp – he has apparently had trouble even breaking a huddle – but both he and Bryce Petty should still get the chance to show what they’ve got against the Titans.
However, he won’t have the benefit of having top receiving target in Quincy Enunwa, who suffered a bulging disc in his neck which will see him miss the entire season. With Enunwa gone, young receivers Jalin Marshall, Charone Peake, and ArDarius Stewart should get the opportunity to play a lot more snaps than expected in preseason.
It also remains to be seen whether first-round pick Jamal Adams will be risked in Week 1. The rookie safety suffered an ankle sprain recently, although he has already returned to practice.
