Tennessee will not have Hendon Hookeri in the Orange Bowl due to injury, but the Volunteers should still be fine. Under center for them instead of Hooker against Clemson is Joe Milton III, who got a nice warm-up in Tennessee’s 56-0 win on the road against the Vanderbilt Commodores. In that game, Milton passed for 147 yards and a touchdown with zero interceptions on 11/21 completions. He’s obviously not an elite college quarterback, but he’ll be surrounded by a loaded supporting cast, including wide receiver Jalin Hyatt, who had 1,267 receiving yards and 15 touchdown grabs in 2022. The Vols had the highest-scoring offense in the nation in 2022, with an average of 45.7 points per game.
Tennessee is 9-3 against the spread in its last 12 games.
Betting on the Clemson Tigers (-5.5)
Record: 11-2 Overall/8-0 Conference
The first thing to know about Clemson heading into its showdown versus the Volunteers in the Orange Bowl is that DJ Uiagalelei will not be playing for the team – ever. Uiagalelei has entered the transfer portal and is reportedly headed to the Oregon State Beavers. Instead of Uiagalelei, Clemson will have Cade Klubnik under center on Friday. Klubnik led the Tigers to a 39-10 win over the North Carolina Tar Heels in the 2022 ACC Championship Game, passing for 116 yards and a touchdown on 20/24 completions. He also rushed for 30 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. The Tigers have a stout defense, especially against the run, and that could be too good for Milton to handle.
Clemson is 4-0 against the spread in their last four bowl games.
Writer’s Prediction
Clemson wins, 28-24.
