Betting on the Texas Tech Red Raiders (odds)
Record: 16-5 Overall/5-3 Conference
The Red Raiders are looking to victimize West Virginia again. They have already defeated Bob Huggins’ team bac on Jan. 22 at home to the tune of a 78-65 score, thanks in large part to Texas Tech’s stout defense. The Red Raiders gave West Virginia a taste of its own medicine by forcing the Mountaineers to commit 16 turnovers. On the season, the Red Raiders are ninth in the nation in opponents’ non-steal turnover rate (12.6%) and best in conference play with league opponents committing non-steal TOs 12.3% of the time. Texas Tech also had just beaten the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Lubbock last Saturday, with the Bulldogs turning the ball over a whopping 21 times. The Red Raiders could be without Terrence Shannon Jr. (12.0 PPG) in the rematch against West Virginia, but Adonis Arms and Kevin Obanor are ready to step up after combining for 29 points in the Mississippi State game.
Texas Tech, which plays the Texas Longhorns at home Tuesday, is 3-1 against the spread in its last four games.
Betting on the West Virginia Mountaineers (odds)
Record: 13-8 Overall/2-6 Conference
West Virginia is on a free fall, having lost all of its last six games. The latest being a tough 81-77 loss at the hands of the reigning national champions Baylor Bears in Waco Monday night. Nevertheless, the Mountaineers performed well enough against Baylor to beat the spread as two-digit road underdogs. Taz Sherman erupted for 29 points in a losing effort for West Virginia against Baylor, while Sean McNeil added 16 points. Sherman leads the Mountaineers this season with 18.3 points per game, while McNeil is right behind him with 13.3 per outing. Apart from those two clicking on offense again versus Texas Tech, the Mountaineers need to cut down on turnovers. They are good at making the other team lose the ball (12th in opponents turnover rate [21.3% ]) but they are worse than them in terms of ball security, and that’s one thing West Virginia has to address. Sherman scored 21 points in the loss to Texas Tech, while McNeil was silent with only seven points.
West Virginia is 5-4 against the spread in its last nine games as the home team.
Writer’s Prediction
Texas Tech wins, 67-64.
