Why should you watch Mayweather vs. McGregor
1. It is entertainment
Based on their personalities alone, Mayweather and McGregor are folks you would pay to see engaging in a slap fest, let alone trying to smash each other’s teeth in. America has seen its fair share of entertainment drawn from interesting characters that are devoid of talent, skill, and intellect—like the Kardahsians!
The difference in this situation, however, is that Mayweather and McGregor are guys with actual talent—world-class talent—only they aren’t using that as the primary selling point of this match. Let’s face it. This isn’t a fight that is honestly marketed to appeal to our sporting senses. Nor is this fight one that purists would spend much time taking seriously. But no matter how you cut it, we just can’t avoid our attention get piqued.
2. A fight is a fight
Sure we did say earlier that this isn’t really something purists would take seriously, but at the end of the day, this is still a boxing match. While we’ve seen boxers fight MMA fighters before, those were not between two elite athletes still at their prime. We may be stretching the definition of ‘prime’ in Mayweather’s case but the dude is going to fight in relative peak form and undefeated in 49 boxing matches—several against Hall of Famers. McGregor is far from being the overall best striker in the MMA world but his aggression and ability to knock an opponent out cold with just one punch should, to a degree, give Mayweather some trouble.
Well, maybe he does, but then again Mayweather, who is -650 to win, has fought heavy-handed boxers before (Miguel Cotto, Manny Pacquiao, Shane Mosley) and Money all made them look silly. In any case, this fight should provide a visual evidence of what happens when a boxer and an MMA fighter engage in a fight, a question that has long been answered decidedly in favor of the former.
3. Schadenfreude
Mayweather has his set of fans and so does McGregor but there are millions of people out there who do not have fondness for any of these two combatants. They are the same folks who harbor disgust and repugnance for both Mayweather and McGregor and would watch the fight for the simple reason that there’s nothing that would bring them joy than seeing either fighter lose. That is until we realize that both fighters are making millions of dollars out of this all.
