Betting on the Virginia Cavaliers (16-1)

Defensively, Tony Bennett’s Cavaliers are way better than LeBron James’ Cavaliers. Virginia owns the best defense in the nation, one that punches opponents in the mouth and leaves a bad taste in it as well. The Cavaliers are allowing just 52.9 points per game. That Boa constrictor of a defense is the main reason why Wake Forest is probably trembling right now. The Demon Deacons are not among the elite in offense, but they will likely look more mediocre against Virginia’s defense that also limits opponents to a brutal 36.4 field goal shooting percentage. Likewise, Virginia is not a big-scoring team, but it will cut down to size any team it shares the court with. Then No. 12 North Carolina averages 12 points more this season than Virginia, but the Cavaliers beat the Tar Heels on Jan. 6.

Betting on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (8-9)

Wake Forest needs to #StayWoke. While the Demon Deacons are on an ugly three-game skid, it could erase most of the damage those losses wreaked on their March Madness resume by taking down Virginia. It’s not going to be easy, but it’s not impossible either. Virginia has lost once this season, against West Virginia on Dec. 5 to the tune of a 68-61 score. One advantage Danny Manning’s team has over Virginia is rebounding. The Demon Deacons are getting 38.8 rebounds per game, while Virginia is last in the ACC with 35.6. Of course, Virginia plays slow-paced basketball, which limits its chances of collaring rebounds, but if Wake Forest could pluck down plenty of offensive rebounds, Virginia could have a hard time playing intense defense for an entire game. Virginia was outrebounded by WVU, 32-27.

Writer’s Prediction:

Virginia wins, 68-50.
