Betting on the Washington Capitals (+1.5)
The Capitals entered the Stanley Cup Finals with scoring against Marc-Andre Fleury as their biggest concern. In Game 1, however, it seemed that stopping Golden Knights’ offense was their most pressing issue. The Caps, who outshot the high-octane offense of Tampa Bay in all but one game of the Eastern Conference finals, allowed Vegas to take 34 shots on goal on Monday compared to Washington’s 28. Braden Holtby definitely has to make amends in the next game after allowing five goals. He’s been sensational for most of the playoffs so asking him to bounce back is not that hard to expect of him. Holtby is 12-7 in the playoffs with a 2.20 GAA and a .919 SV%. The Caps are 7-3 in their last 10 road games.
Betting on the Vegas Golden Knights (-1.5)
The Knights just keep on rolling. Despite seeing the Caps take the lead in the third period, Vegas showed its poise as the Golden Knights took the lead back for good thanks to back-to-back goals from Ryan Reaves and Tomas Nosek. The Golden Knights were able to weather the pressure because they have operated as huge underdogs from the start. It also helped that they were playing at home, where they are 9-1 in their last 10 games there. It’s an encouraging sign for Vegas to have done better on offense that Washington, which entered Game 1 second among all playoff teams in scoring. The Knights’ scoring outburst also came at a time when Fleury was seemingly not on top of his game, allowing four goals in 28 shots faced. Still, Fleury owns a fantastic record of 13-3 and a 1.81 GAA in 16 starts this postseason.
Writer’s Prediction
Washington wins, 3-2.
