Betting on Washington Redskins (0-0)
For the first time, the Redskins are going to let rookie Dwayne Haskins play in front of a national audience, as they take on the Browns in Week 1 of the preseason. Haskins was among the biggest names in this year’s NFL Draft. Regarded by many as the best quarterback in that draft class, Haskins somehow slid down to the Redskins’ lap at the 15th spot. The Redskins also have another new quarterback in the more experienced Case Keenum, but that doesn’t mean Haskins isn’t going to be their opening day starter. Apart from Haskins, the Redskins will also parade some of their other rookies like defensive end Montez Sweat. Sweat will have his hands full against the Browns’ souped-up offense, but he’s eager to prove he belongs in the NFL. The Redskins’ backfield is a bit crowded with Adrian Peterson and Derrius Guice atop the order, but Craig Reynolds, Byron Marshall, and Shaun Wilson will all be fighting for roster spots in the preseason.
The over is 3-1 in the Redskins’ last four preseason games.
Betting on Cleveland Browns (0-0)
Browns nation can’t wait for the 2019 NFL season to start. For now, they’ll have to content themselves watching Cleveland in the preseason, beginning with this matchup against the Redskins. Much of the excitement comes from the arrival of wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to The Land. There’s a slim chance that Beckham will play in this game, but even if he does it’ll be for a minimal number of snaps. Apart from the seemingly high-powered offense, the Browns are parading an improved defense that received an injection of youth via the draft. They drafted cornerback Greedy Williams, linebacker Sione Takitaki, and safety Sheldrick Redwine, along with linebacker Mack Wilson. All are expected to see significant action, as they prepare to be regulars of Cleveland’s stop unit that allowed 24.5 points per game in 2018. Under center, Drew Stanton, Garrett Gilbert, and David Blough should have the quarterbacking duties against Washington split up among themselves.
The Browns are 7-1 against the spread (ATS) in their last eight preseason games.
Writer’s Prediction
Browns win, 24-17.
