Why Conor McGregor will lose to Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Conor McGregor is the clear underdog in his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. The brash-talking Irishman is priced at +425 to shock the world and hand the undefeated Mayweather – generally regarded as one of the best boxers of all-time – his first loss. However, here are three very compelling reasons why that likely won’t happen.

Why McGregor will lose to Mayweather

He’s out of his element

McGregor may be a champion mixed martial artist in two weight classes, but he’ll be out of his element inside a boxing ring. He’s never participated in a professional boxing match in his life, and the difference between that and an MMA bout will be stark, as he will no doubt find out. And apart from the fact that he’ll be the one who needs to adjust, the caliber of his opponent will also be a bit of a problem.

He’s going up against the greatest boxer of his generation

Imagine being a rookie in the NBA—one that only played basketball part-time— and facing the G.O.A.T. himself, Michael Jordan, in your debut. That’ll basically be what McGregor will be going up against in his first pro boxing bout. He’ll be fighting the best boxer of his generation in Floyd Mayweather, who is a perfect 49-0. Money takes enormous pride in that undefeated record, and he’s not going to want to lose it to a boxing part-timer like McGregor.

He’s already won

McGregor doesn’t really need to win this fight. He’s not the pro boxer after all. Plus, he’s already won by virtue of being part of potentially the biggest boxing bout in history and the life-changing payday that comes with it. He’ll still try, of course, since he’d still like to save some face and avoid getting completely humiliated by Mayweather. But apart from that, there’s really no incentive for him to actually go out and win a fight he really has no business winning anyway.
