2015 Deutsche Bank Championship Sleeper Picks
Jim Furyk
[sc:Golf240banner ]Jim Furyk is having an excellent year, majors notwithstanding. He’s ranked in the top five in three of his last four tournaments, namely the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational (third), RBC Canadian Open (fourth) and the Memorial Tournament (fifth). Furyk ranks seventh on tour in total strokes gained (1.537) and 15th in scoring average (70.039), both of which should help him keep a low score at a manageable course like TPC Boston.
Furyk was very inconsistent in this tournament last year, though. He shot a 66 in the second round, but followed that up with a 69 and a 70 in the final two rounds. Assuming Furyk can hit safely and accurately, expect him to be in position to win the Deutsche Bank championship.
Carl Pettersson
Carl Pettersson isn’t exactly one of the best golfers in the world. He’s ranked in the top 10 just three times this year, missing the cut in 11 of 31 events he’s played in. But two of those top 10 finishes came in his last four tournaments; Petterson ranked sixth at the Wyndham Championship and fourth at the Quicken Loans National.
The Swedish golfer can also draw from his excellent game at TPC Boston last year, when he finished tied for ninth with a five-under par 275. Pettersson was spectacular in the final round, shooting a 66. But that wouldn’t be enough for his three-over par 73 in the second round. His recent form and serviceable performance at TPC Boston should have Pettersson among the frontrunners in this tournament.
Chris Kirk
Chris Kirk missed the cut at the Barclays and finished 75th with a 21-over par 268 at the U.S. Open. His recent form may tell that he’s in quite a slump. But it wasn’t too long ago that he won a tournament, taking the Crown Plaza Invitational title with a 12-under par 268 in May. Kirk also happens to be the defending Deutsche Bank champion, winning last year’s tournament with a 15-under par 269.
Kirk was spectacular at TPC Boston last year. After hitting a 73 in the first round, he rebounded by scoring 66 in the second and fourth rounds and 64 in the third. Expect Kirk to put on another excellent performance at this year’s Deutsche Bank Championship.
