Premier League Week 11 Predictions and Preview
Saturday, November 5
Bournemouth vs. Sunderland (11:00 AM ET)
Sunderland just looks hopeless right now. The Black Cats have claimed just two points in their first 10 games, and are languishing at the bottom of the table. And as if things can’t get any worse, they won’t have manager David Moyes on the touchline when they visit Bournemouth.
Despite a bad loss to Middlesbrough, Bournemouth should be able to bounce back against the Black Cats. The Cherries have won three of five home games thus far this season. They also won this fixture against Sunderland 2-0 last season.
Writer’s Prediction: Bournemouth inflicts more suffering on Sunderland, as the Cherries win 2-0. Take Bournemouth at (-0.5, -1) (-130) on the Asian handicap for added value, as even a one-goal Cherries win will win you half your stake.
Burnley vs. Crystal Palace (11:00 AM ET)
Burnley is no joke at home. All three of the Clarets’ wins this season have come at Turf Moor. They defeated a very good Everton team 2-1 in their last home game, and almost held Arsenal to a draw in the game before that.
Palace is really struggling at the moment, with three losses and a draw in its last four games. They also haven’t kept a clean sheet in nine consecutive matches. Look for the Clarets to capitalize and score another positive result at home.
Writer’s Prediction: The value is very much on Burnley in this matchup. Take the Clarets (+195) for the home win, 1-0.
Manchester City vs. Middlesbrough (11:00 AM ET)
The City slump is officially over. After a six-match winless run, they’ve now scored back-to-back wins over West Brom (4-0) and Barcelona (3-1). Ilkay Gundogan has added yet another weapon to an already formidable City side. He has scored four goals in those two wins.
There really shouldn’t be much of a European hangover for City since they’ll get to play back-to-back home games. And as competent as Boro have been on the road (1-3-1), City should have more than enough to keep their current winning run going.
Writer’s Prediction: City runs riot with a 3-0 home win. Take City at -2 (EVEN) on the Asian handicap for added value.
West Ham United vs. Stoke City (11:00 AM ET)
Don’t look now but Stoke City is coming on strong. The Potters have now won three games on the bounce, all by a two-goal margin. On the other side, West Ham still don’t look convincing on offense or defense. They have scored more than one goal just twice in 10 league games, and those came in 4-2 defeats. Meanwhile, their 19 goals conceded is third-worst in the division.
It’s tough to see the Potters losing this matchup the way they’re currently playing, so the Asian handicap should be a smart play here.
Writer’s Prediction: Take Stoke at +0.5 (-120) on the Asian handicap, which means you win if Stoke wins or draws.
Chelsea vs. Everton (1:30 PM ET)
No team has been hotter than Chelsea at the moment. Since their 3-0 humbling against Arsenal – and since manager Antonio Conte’s switch to a three-man defense – the Blues have won four-straight league games by a combined score of 11-0. Impressive stuff.
But if there’s one manager with the tactical savvy to disrupt Chelsea’s system, it’s Everton’s Ronald Koeman. The Dutchman went toe-to-toe with Pep Guardiola to earn a 1-1 draw with City a few weeks ago.
Everton owns the second-best defensive record (8 goals conceded) and has given up two goals just once in 10 league games. While the Toffees attack will struggle to score, their defense can also make things tough for a Chelsea offense that’s firing on all cylinders at the moment.
Writer’s Prediction: The total looks like the best play in this matchup between two very good defenses. Take the total to go under 3.0 goals.
Sunday, November 6
Arsenal vs. Tottenham (7:00 AM ET)
Spurs are slumping big time. They’ve now gone six matches without a win (four draws, two losses) since their 2-0 win over City on Oct. 2. Their Harry Kane-less attackhas been largely to blame, as they’ve scored just three goals in those six games.
The Gunners, though, could be a little leggy after expending more energy than anticipated in a come-from-behind win away to Ludogorets. They were held to a 0-0 draw against Middlesbrough the last time they returned from Europe, and needed a stoppage time winner to beat Burnley 1-0 in another post-Champions League fixture.
Despite Spurs’ anemic offense, the defense (just one open-play goal conceded all season) is still good enough to keep the Gunners at bay.
Writer’s Prediction: It’s hard to see too many goals in what will likely be a cagey derby game, so the total should go under 2.5 goals in this one.
Hull vs. Southampton (9:15 AM ET)
Hull are as bad as everyone thought they were. After winning their first two games, the Tigers have picked up exactly one point in their last eight. They’re the perfect opponent for Southampton to snap a two-match winless run after back-to-back games against Man City and Chelsea. The Saints should also be in high spirits after an impressive home win over Inter Milan in the Europa League.
Writer’s Prediction: Southampton (-160) comfortably wins outright, 2-0.
Liverpool vs. Watford (9:15 AM ET)
Anfield has been a fortress for Liverpool this season. They’ve won three out of four home games, and were held to a scoreless draw against Man United. They scored 11 goals in those three home wins.
Watford has proven to be quite a tough out, though. The Hornets are 4-2-1 in their last seven games, and have risen to 7th in the table. While Liverpool should have enough firepower to get the win, Watford will be a threat themselves against a Reds defense which has kept just one clean sheet in the league.
Writer’s Prediction: Liverpool win 3-1, just about pushing the total over 3.0 goals.
Swansea vs. Manchester United (10:00 AM ET)
Yes, it’s not looking good for Man United at the moment. They’re winless in their last four league games, and Paul Pogba picked up an injury in their Europa League loss to Fenerbahce. But as bad as they’ve been relative to their lofty expectations, Swansea have been worse. The Swans are 0-2-7 since winning their opening game.
United were monumentally unlucky as they drew with Burnley despite launching 38 shots. At some point, those shots have to find the net, and there’s a good chance a struggling Swansea team will oblige.
Writer’s Prediction: Manchester United (-175) gets back on track with a 2-0 away win.
Leicester City vs. West Bromwich Albion (11:30 AM ET)
Leicester has been as Jekyll and Hyde as it gets this season. The defending champs have been wretched on the road, with four losses and a draw in five games. However, they’ve been unbeatable at home. They’ve won three and drawn two, with eight goals scored and just two conceded.
Don’t expect a European hangover, either. Leicester are 2-1-0 in the fixture after a Champions League match this season, and have actually scored their biggest wins of the season (3-0 vs. Burnley and 3-1 vs. Palace) with short rest. They should be able to extend their impressive home form against a West Brom side which has gone winless in its last five matches.
Writer’s Prediction: Leicester (-148) scores another home win, 2-0 over West Brom.
