Marcos Baghadatis could be primed for another strong finish here. He’s managed to reach at least the quarterfinal in three of the last four tournaments that he has joined. That stretch includes a semifinal appearance at Newport, wherein the World No. 43 suffered a heart-breaking defeat to Ivo Karlovic after two tightly-contested sets.
Baghdatis, needless to say, is hoping to produce better results at Washington this week. And he might just be able to do so, as the 31-year-old veteran is no stranger to the pressure of playing at the Citi Open. He finished as the runner-up back in the 2010 edition of this event.
Yen-Hsun Lu
Yen-Hsun Lu’s heading into this tournament coming off an early exit (second round) at Wimbledon 2016. Well, in all fairness, you have to consider the fact that he was against a much-better player in the form of Andy Murray, who defeated the Taiwanese veteran after three dominant sets (6-3, 6-2, 6-1).
Despite that setback though, Lu’s had a share of good moments this season. He was crowned champion at the IIkley Challenger and Surbiton Challenger. He also almost won it all at the Manchester Challenger, but unfortunately fell short to Dustin Brown in the final (7-6(5), 6-1).
Overall, the competition at Washington’s bound to be tougher, but Lu’s downfalls and successes throughout this year should help him turn a few more heads in this particular event. Plus, he’s got nothing to lose here as well.
Vasek Pospisil
Vasek Pospisil has had a miserable year thus far, winning just five of his 16 total matches. But he might finally catch the break he’s been waiting for at Washington this week.
Posipil, who currently ranks No. 99 in the ATP rankings, was just one win away from being crowned champion in the 2014 Citi Open. Unfortunately, he lost to his fellow countryman, Milos Raonic, in the final, 6-1, 6-4. The 26-year-old Canadian’s definitely still looking to redeem himself from that shortcoming.
