Sam Querrey

250x130-250FREE-6-16-16

Sam Querrey’s on a downward spiral right now, suffering early exits in the last three events that he’s played in. The most recent of which was just this past week at Cincinnati, where he was bested by Pablo Cuevas in the opening round, 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3. But even with this current slump, the American still holds a relatively solid chance of leaving many stunned at North Carolina for this year’s installment of the Winston-Salem Open.

Speaking of which, Querrey is set to participate for the fifth-straight year at this tournament and will enter as the sixth seed. He made the semifinals here from 2012 to 2014, but was eliminated in the third round last year at the hands of Simone Boleli. Nevertheless, those moments of success and downfalls should give the World No. 29 an enticing edge in the competition.

Gilles Simon

Like Querrey, Gilles Simon is also looking to redeem himself from a first-round exit in Cincinnati last week. He might just be able to do so, as most of the Frenchman’s brilliant moments this season have occurred on the hard court.

Simon, who is still in search for his first singles title this year, made it all the way to the Round of 16 in Rio and Melbourne. He also had a solid run at the Miami Masters, carrying himself all the way to the quarterfinal. In that round, however, the World No. 31 was beaten by David Goffin after three sets.

Marcos Baghdatis

Marcos Baghadatis heads into Winston-Salem desperate for some much-needed momentum and confidence. He faltered early in his last two tourneys at Cincinnati and Washington. Prior to those ugly finishes though, the 31-year-old veteran from Cyprus has clinched at least the quarterfinal in three of his previous four events. That stretch includes an entertaining three-set loss at Newport to eventual champion Ivo Karlovic.
