2016 English Premier League Futures Odds Update
Favorites
Leicester City
Leicester City are almost there. Their amazing Cinderella story of worst to first is just seven games away from ending in a Premier League championship. The Foxes are in the driver’s seat with a five-point lead over second-place Tottenham, and are priced at -200 to successfully maintain that advantage by season’s end.
Of those seven, three matches will be very tricky tests: West Ham at home, Manchester United away and Chelsea away in the season finale. It remains to be seen if the Foxes finally succumb to pressure, but with an excellent defense that’s kept four clean sheets in the last five games, they stand a very good chance of hanging on.Tottenham Hotspur
With their recent Europa League exit, Spurs now have only the Premier League to focus on this season. They’ll sure need that extra time and energy to focus on their run-in, which looks pretty tough on paper.
Their next six matches will all be against teams currently 11th or higher in the table, and include tough away trips to Anfield, the Britannia and Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, their season finale will be against a Newcastle team that could be fighting for their Premier League lives.
Spurs are priced at +275 to make up their five-point deficit on leaders Leicester, although it’s hard to see how Tottenham come away unscathed over the next few weeks.
Sleeper
Arsenal
Arsenal are a distant 11 points from the leaders, although they still have to play one more game than the top two. Their run-in involves five home games, all of which are against teams in the bottom half of the table. However, two of their three away games are against fellow top four challengers, West Ham and Manchester City.
The Gunners are curiously priced at +600 to still win the title. In order for them to overtake not one, but two teams, they will likely need to run the table – or come very close to it – over their last eight games. Even with a favorable schedule, though, it’s just tough to fully trust this inconsistent Arsenal team to go on that type of run.
Long Shots
Manchester City
It’s never smart to completely count out a team that has the quality that Man City has, but there’s a reason they’re now a +5,000 long shot to win a third Premier League title. Aside from the fact that City are already struggling and 15 points from first (with a game in hand), they also have the Champions League quarterfinals to contend with.
City still need to put full effort in the league because of their precarious Champions League position, and their run-in isn’t a picnic, either. They must still go to Chelsea and Southampton, and host Arsenal in the penultimate week of the season.
Manchester United
It’ll take something close to a miracle for Manchester United’s +10,000 odds to win the title to pay out this year. They have eight games remaining to claw back a 16-point deficit, and three of those games are against top-five teams (at Tottenham, Leicester and at West Ham). At this point, United should be more than satisfied with a Champions League place and drop any illusions of a shock title run.
West Ham United
You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that with +50,000 odds, West Ham most likely aren’t winning the title. Their tough run-in, with games against Arsenal, Leicester and United, will most likely take them out of the running eventually. However, it’s quite an achievement in itself for the Hammers to be one of the very last teams with even a faint glimmer of hope to win the title this deep in the season.
