Ryan Ruffels
[sc:Golf240banner ]Highly-touted Australian teenager Ryan Ruffels makes his professional debut at the Farmers Insurance Open. He showed some promise at the RBC Canadian Open, opening with a 66 in the first round before rounds of 75 and 76 led to a MDF on Saturday. He’s far ahead of his game as a 17 year old; he’s already played in the Australian Open when he was 15 and has played on both the European and U.S. Tours.
Ruffels made headlines when he won $5,000 on a one-on-one friendly wager with one Phil Mickelson of all people. He’ll be an interesting sleeper to win in his professional debut. If he’s as talented as he’s pegged to be, then Ruffels will enjoy plenty from having seven free shots at events in an attempt to try to gain full status on the world’s biggest circuit.
Brandt Snedeker
Brandt Snedeker is entering the Farmers Insurance Open hot on the heels of two solid tournaments in January. He placed second at the Sony Open, and tied for third at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions before that.
Snedeker (+1,500) is just two years removed from a solid outing at the Farmers Insurance Open, placing second in 2013 with a 10-under par, and three years removed from his first title at the event in 2012. Expect him to be at his best in a course that he knows well and loves.
J.B. Holmes
J.B. Holmes (+3,300) narrowly missed out on a big win at the Farmers Insurance Open last year. He took part in a crowded four-man playoff for the title. He tied for second with a nine-under par 279. He finished one shot back off eventual champion Jason Day in the playoff. He finished with an eagle and 13 birdies, but also hit six bogeys. If Holmes can limit his mistakes, then he could be up for a big win at this year’s tournament.
