2016 PGA Tour Championship Preview
Favorites – Dustin Johnson (+400) and Rory McIlroy (+500)
At this point, you shouldn’t be surprised that Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy are the top two favorites to win the tournament. Both are obviously at the height of their respective careers and any events they’ve entered in surely would have them installed as chalks. Johnson, who is assigned with odds of +400, is coming off a confidence-building win at the BMW Championship. For those keeping count, that is Johnson’s third win across 21 starts on the season. Johnson paces everyone with 5,189 FedEx Cup points and a win next weekend will hand him the FedEx Cup.McIlroy, on the other hand, needs to win The Tour Championship and the No. 1 player to finish T2 or worse. McIlroy has a relatively subpar season and although he finished first at the Deutsche Bank Championship, he followed that up with an underwhelming T42 at the BMW Championship. Still, McIlroy has shown he can do well at East Lake having placed second there in 2014 and 10th back in 2012.
High-Value Sleepers – Jimmy Walker (+2,800) and Brandt Snedeker (+2,800)
Whatever happens at East Lake, Walker’s year is already a memorable one, largely thanks to his win at the PGA Championship last July. Apart from that, Walker is also heating up at the right moment having finished third at the Deutsche Bank Championship and T13 at the BMW Championship. Snedeker, meanwhile, sits next to Walker in the FedEx Cup points with 2,117. He’s not out yet of the FedEx Cup race, and a win next weekend will boost his chances of snatching his second FedEx Cup title. He first won it in 2012.Snedeker has seven top 10’s in 26 events on the season.
Long Shot – Johnny Vegas (+8,000)
He’s got a cool name, we’ll give him that. He’s also mathematically still in the FedEx Cup race despite being 29th in the points standings with 1,611. For that to happen though, all the stars will have to align for him, as he’ll need to win the Tour Championship and hope that Dustin Johnson finish no better than 27th among other requirements. In his last start, Vegas had a T24 at the BMW Championship.
