There’s no hotter matchup in the golfing world right now than the one between Jason Day (+450) and Dustin Johnson (+500). The world’s top two golfers have been playing some exceptional golf of late and they are expected to post some insane red numbers this week here at Glen Abbey. This is the first time since 1997 that the Canadian Open will feature the two best players in the world.
Day has finished in the top-10 in seven of his last 10 starts, including victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, WGC Match Play and PLAYERS Championship. Johnson, on the other hand, has won two of his last three starts, capturing the U.S. Open and the WGC Bridgestone Invitational titles. It’s basically a toss-up between these two talented golfers but we give the slight edge to Jason Day because of his recent record here in this tournament. He won the Canadian Open in exciting fashion last year, blitzing the Abbey with three closing birdies to outlast American Bubba Watson and Canadian David Hearn. Look for the world no. 1 to duplicate that feat this year.
It’s been 62 years since a local golfer last won the Canadian Open. The pressure is definitely on the PGA Tour’s top two Canadian golfers, David Hearn (+3,000) and Graham DeLaet (+2,500), to bring the trophy home this coming weekend. David Hearn came close to ending that long drought last year, losing by just two strokes to eventual champion Jason Day. He had a two-shot lead entering the final round but an even-par 72 in the last 18 holes doomed Hearn’s title aspirations.
Hearn will fancy his chances of repeating that title run this week as he has been playing some excellent golf of late. He has recorded five top-20 finishes in his last nine starts. Hearn is fresh off a T-20 at the recently-concluded Barbasol Championships. DeLaet, on the other hand, finished tied for eighth in that same tournament, shooting a 14-under-par total of 270. Last week’s performance at the Barbasol was DeLaet’s first top 10 since March. That being said, we still give the edge to Hearn because of his recent form and his experience with the Glen Abbey course.
In a case of Canadian Open experience over current form, you can bank on 46-year-old Jim Furyk (+2,000) to have a much better outing at Glen Abbey this week than compatriot Brandt Snedeker (+2,000). Snedeker may have six top-25 finishes in his last nine starts but we can’t discount Furyk’s outstanding record in this golf tournament. Furyk won the Canadian Open in 2006 and 2007 and has recorded top 10s in his last two trips to Glen Abbey. He led the field in par-4 scoring and scrambling last year en route to a solo fourth-place finish.
