Gary Woodland
Looking for a worthy long shot this week? How about Gary Woodland? The American is the longest hitter on the PGA Tour, averaging a whopping 313.1 yards per drive this season. That will be a major asset for Woodland as he tackles the long 7,575-yard, par-72 course here at Quail Hollow this week. Woodland already has two top-20 finishes this year (Sony Open, Farmers Insurance Open) so it isn’t far-fetched to see him sneak up the leaderboard once again this week.Geoff Ogilvy
To say that Geoff Ogilvy has a disappointing start to the 2016 season would be a severe understatement. The Australian has missed the cut in nine of his 11 starts this season. That being said, he’s still one long shot who’s worth a punt for this week’s Wells Fargo Championship. Ogilvy exceeded expectations in this tournament last year, finishing in a tie for seventh with an 11-under-par total of 277. Look for Ogilvy to surprise once again this week.
David Toms
One long shot who can definitely make a run at the Wells Fargo title is David Toms. The grizzled veteran has finished in the top-40 in each of his last three starts. He’s currently tied for 42nd at the rain-hit Zurich Classic tournament, shooting a five-under-par total of 139 through the first two rounds. The 13-time PGA Tour winner loves playing at Quail Hollow as evidenced by his tournament win here back in 2003. He finished in 72nd place in this event last year.
What makes Toms such a threat in every golf event that he competes on is his solid hitting off the tee. He is 20th in the PGA Tour in driving accuracy percentage, with a 68.45 percent clip. That will come in handy for Toms when navigating the narrow fairways of this tough Quail Hollow course.
