Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are the favorites to win the 2017 ATP Rogers Cup, and with good reason. They have combined to win all but one of the Masters and Grand Slams this year. However, if the tennis legends somehow falter, who else can step up to take the crown? These three sleepers possibly could, and should be worth betting on over the course of the event.

Alexander Zverev
Can Alexander Zverev make it two in a row? That’s the question on everybody’s lips heading into this week’s Masters event in Montreal. Zverev powered his way to the Citi Open title last week, beating Kevin Anderson in straight sets in the final. With that victory, the 20-year-old rising star from Germany racked up his fourth ATP title of the year. That matches Nadal’s championship total this season and trails only Federer’s five-tournament haul. Zverev is the only player other than Federer or Nadal to win a Masters event this year, in Rome.
Vasek Pospisil
One player you can’t sleep on this week is Vasek Pospisil. There’s something about the Rogers Cup that brings the best out of the Vernon native. Pospisil reached the semifinals of the 2013 Rogers Cup as a wildcard, losing in an epic three-setter to fellow Canadian Milos Raonic. Even though he has never won a singles title on the ATP tour, the six-foot-four right-hander has the all-around game to trouble even the best players in the world. Pospisil has been a staple in this tournament as Canada’s second-best player will be making his seventh appearance in the main draw at this event.
Nick Kyrgios
Nick Kyrgios has finally emerged from the wilderness, beating Viktor Troicki, 6-1, 6-2, in a 50-minute blow-out in the first round of the 2017 Rogers Cup to snap his two-month winless drought. The Australian blasted eight aces and won 21 of 24 first-serve points in that clash to nab his first victory since he defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber at Roland Garros in May. If Kyrgios can get his health and mindset in order, the sky’s the limit for the 22-year-old who is 12-4 on the hard courts this season.
