UEFA Champions League Quarterfinals First Leg Sleeper Picks and Predictions
Leicester City (+875) vs. Atletico Madrid (-485)
It’s confirmed that Leicester skipper Wes Morgan is ruled out of the quarterfinal round, which puts the Foxes in a much tougher situation in their showdown with a heavily-favored and experienced Atletico side. But as we’ve witnessed prior to this tie, this Leicester team has turned doubters/haters into believers, when it eased through their first five games of the Champions League before that dreadful 5-0 loss to Porto.
Jamie Vardy has bagged six goals in his last eight appearances for the Foxes who are playing tremendous confidence and offensive form. They, however, have to figure out how to slow down Atletico’s scoring machine in Antonio Griezman. The Frenchman already has 23 goals on the season.
Writer’s Prediction: Leicester (+875) wins the opening leg, 2-1.
AS Monaco (+360) vs. Borussia Dortmund (-192)
This is the first-ever meeting between Monaco and Dortmund in UEFA competition.
Both sides are overflowing with individual talent, in solid shape and form—things that should prompt an entertaining high-scoring affair. Dortmund is averaging at least three goals per game in the tournament, while Monaco already reached the 100-goal a few weeks ago and will continue to lean on Radamel Falcao, who’s somehow relocated his dominant form. Monaco is also coming off a thrilling 6-6 result with Manchester City in the previous round.
Writer’s Prediction: AS Monaco (+360) wins, 4-3.
Real Madrid (+305) vs. Bayern Munich (-144)
Current Bayern manager Carlo Ancelotti would love to see the Bavarians beat his former group. Their form at home has been simply superb this season, going undefeated in 21 games (18 wins, three draws) in all competition. They’ve also tallied 29 goals in their last six matches at Allianz Arena. But do note that Bayern’s last defeat at home came at the hands of Real during the second leg of the 2012-13 Champions League semi-finals. And apart from that, Real should be at its best form here after cruising past Napoli, 6-2 on aggregate, in the Round of 16.
Writer’s Prediction: Real (+305) owns the first leg, 3-1.
