Victoria Azarenka and Anett Kontaveit are the favorites at the 2017 WTA Mallorca Open, but the field is pretty wide open behind them. There’s every chance a couple of long shots might make some noise in the tournament, and here are three of the top candidates to do just that.
Jankovic has just fallen off a cliff this season. The former World No. 1 has lost 14 of her 19 matches, including her latest match, a first-round exit at the hands of World No. 285 Petra Krejsova at the Ricoh Open.
But if she can somehow, some way get her act together, she can be a worthwhile bet at Mallorca given her odds. While she’s been inconsistent on grass over the course of her career, she did reach the semifinals at Mallorca last season, which is somewhat encouraging.
Francesca Schiavone
Schiavone has had a curious season thus far. She hasn’t advanced past the first round in a host of the tournaments she’s entered. However, she did have a terrific stretch in back-to-back clay court tournaments as she won at Bogota and also reached the final at Marrakech.
Those wild swings in quality of play should probably be expected given that she’s 36 years old. And while she’s won just two matches on grass since 2013, she does offer a lot of upside if she can somehow rediscover that type of form in Mallorca.
Shelby Rogers
Rogers is easily having her best season on tour. The 24-year-old American is 16-12 overall, eclipsing her previous career high of 13 wins with a good chunk of the season still remaining. Two of those wins were landmark victories over top-10 players Simona Halep at the Australian Open and fellow American Madison Keys.
Rogers has yet to actually win a single match in the main draw of a tournament on grass over her entire career, but that should change in Mallorca. And with some luck, she could also come close to getting her first career singles title as well.
