Predictions, Picks, and Preview for the First Round of the 2018 NFL Football Draft

1. Cleveland Browns – Sam Darnold, QB, USC

Saquon would have been a sexy pick here, especially after the trade that landed the Browns Tyrod Taylor. But Taylor is not the quarterback of the future of Cleveland. Makes sense for the Browns to get arguable the best QB in the draft as the top pick overall this year.

2. New York Giants — Bradley Chubb, DE, N.C. State

The Giants’ defense needs an identity on defense now, especially after the departure of Jason Pierre-Paul.

3. New York Jets — Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA

At some point, the Jets will have to get tired using Josh McCown under center. They got Teddy Bridgewater, but he’s always going to be a misstep away from seeing his knees explode.

4. Cleveland — Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB, Alabama

Still no Barkley here. But with Fitzpatrick, the Browns can toughen up their promising defense that also now has Damarious Randall in the secondary.

5. Denver Broncos — Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State

Case Keenum isn’t going to morph into Aaron Rodgers in Denver, but at least there’s some sense of security in the team’s quarterback situation, which you could not say about the Broncos’ running backs. By getting Barkley, the Broncos could trade C.J. Anderson for an asset or two, too.

6. Indianapolis Colts — Quenton Nelson, OT, Notre Dame

Indy traded its No. 3 pick for this spot, so the Colts probably are not looking for a glitzy QB, RB here. Instead, they’ll be going after Nelson, considered by many as the best player in the draft regardless of position, to improve oft-hurt quarterback Andrew Luck’s protection.

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers — Denzel Ward, CB, Ohio State

The Bucs finished 2017 with the worst pass defense in the NFL. Obviously, there’s a lot of work to be done on their secondary, and drafting Denzel Ward is a step towards the right direction.

8. Chicago Bears — Trumaine Edmunds, LB, Virginia Tech

The Bears do not have to draft a QB here because there are still plenty of faith left in Mitchell Trubisky. Adding a linebacker like Edmunds to their defensive unit is an ideal move instead for Chicago, which needs someone to fill in the void left on the defensive line after the release of Jerrell Freeman.

9. San Francisco 49ers — Derwin James, S, Florida State

The Niners will try to build their own Legion of Boom around well, Richard Sherman, and surrounding the veteran cornerback with young and talented players with zero baggage is one way to do just that.

10. Oakland Raiders — Roquan Smith, OLB, Georgia

Oakland’s defense was run over by opposing offenses more often than not in 2017, but with Smith, they’ll have a heat-seeking defensive asset who’ll pressure ball carriers nonstop.

Predictions for the Rest of the 2018 NFL Draft First Round:

  1. Miami Dolphins — Vita Vea, DT, Washington
  2. Buffalo Bills — Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma
  3. Washington Redskins — Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama
  4. Green Bay Packers — Marcus Davenport, DL, UTSA
  5. Arizona Cardinals — Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming
  6. Baltimore Ravens — Christian Kirk, WR, Texas A&M
  7. Los Angeles Chargers — Orlando Brown, OT, Oklahoma
  8. Seattle Seahawks — James Washington, WR, Oklahoma State
  9. Dallas Cowboys — Maurice Hurst, DL, Michigan
  10. Detroit Lions — Derrius Guice, RB, LSU
  11. Cincinnati Bengals — Will Hernandez, G, UTEP
  12. Buffalo Bills — Mike Hughes, CB, UCF
  13. New England Patriots — Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville
  14. Carolina Panthers — Isaiah Wynn, G, Georgia
  15. Tennessee Titans — Sam Hubbard, DE/OLB, Ohio State
  16. Atlanta Falcons — Taven Bryan, DT/DE, Florida
  17. New Orleans Saints — Arden Key, DE/OLB, LSU
  18. Pittsburgh Steelers — Rashaan Evans, LB, Alabama
  19. Jacksonville Jaguars — Harold Landry, LB, Boston College
  20. Minnesota Vikings — Billy Price, OL, Ohio State
  21. New England Patriots — Mark Andrews, TE, Oklahoma
  22. Philadelphia Eagles — Ogbonnia Okoronwko, LB, Oklahoma
