Favorites – Patrick Reed (+1,400) and Rickie Fowler (+1,600)
It isn’t a complete surprise to see Rickie Fowler and Patrick Reed installed as favorites to win this week’s Wyndham Championship. Fowler and Reed are the two highest-ranked players in the field and they are playing some outstanding golf of late. Both players are heading right back into competition after playing in the first Olympic golf tournament in more than a century.
In 19 starts this season, Fowler has nabbed seven top-10s and 10 top-25s. Reed, on the other hand, has found the top-15 in five of his last eight starts, including a T13 at last month’s PGA Championship. The 26-year-old Texan loves playing in this Sedgefield course as evidenced by his playoff victory over Jordan Spieth back in 2013. With the form that they are both in right now, expect Fowler and Reed to contend once again for the title this week.
High-Value Sleepers – Jon Rahm (+1,800) and Brandt Snedeker (+2,000)
One golfer who loves playing here in Greensboro is Brandt Snedeker. Since his memorable triumph here in 2007, Snedeker has racked up three more top 10s in this tournament, including a fifth-place finish in 2014. He has been playing some excellent golf of late as well, finishing in the top-25 in four of his last six starts. Key to Snedeker’s resurgence has been his superb play from tee to green. He is 40th in the PGA Tour in strokes gained in that particular department with an impressive .737 clip. That will be a major weapon for Snedeker when dealing with the nooks and crannies of this tough Greensboro course.
Another golfer who’s primed for a huge performance this week is Jon Rahm. He has been dishing out some tremendous golf of late, nabbing a pair of top-3 finishes since turning pro back in June. The 21-year-old Spaniard has made all five cuts in just five starts as a professional. He finished tied for 14th in the recently-concluded John Deere Classic. Rahm will look to grab the victory here at Sedgefield which would automatically give him a two-year exemption in the PGA Tour.
Long Shot – Ernie Els
Looking for a sentimental pick this week? How about South African Ernie Els? The four-time major champion will be making his sixth appearance in the Wyndham Championship this year. Els has had some success in this tournament before, finishing tied for seventh back in 1997. The Big Easy is looking for at least a runner-up finish in this event for the veteran to book a spot in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Els is coming off a 47th-place finish at the Travelers Championship.
One advantage that Els has against the rest of the field is his deft touch on the putting greens. He is 29th in the PGA Tour in strokes gained via putting with a .396 average. That will be a key weapon for Els when navigating the delicate greens of the Donald Ross-designed course.
Writer’s Prediction
Patrick Reed (+1,400) wins his second Wyndham title.
