UFC 203 Sleeper Picks

Ray Borg (+105) vs. Ian McCall (-135)

250x130-250FREE-6-16-16

Between Borg and McCall, the latter radiates with more success in the octagon, having once been ranked No. 1 in the flyweight division. But that’s a long time ago and McCall hasn’t fought since January of last year, when he lost to John Lineker via unanimous decision.

The rust McCall has accumulated during that long layoff may slow him down against someone like Borg, who is coming off a loss to ustin Scoggins back in February.  Mostly a grappler, Borg will likely look to test McCall’s endurance, which is kind of suspect for “Uncle Creepy”, given his lengthy absence.

Prediction: Borg wins via split decision.

Jason Gonzalez (+135) vs. Drew Dober (-165)

Jason Gonzalez isn’t originally slated to fight this Saturday, but with Erik Koch unable to go due to an injury suffered in training camp, he’ll be the one to dance with Dober in UFC 203. With that, Dober is going to fight someone taller than him by seven inches in Gonzalez, who stands 6-2. Apart from that, Dober might have been thrown off a bit by having to deviate from his original game plan because of the change in opponent. Gonzalez knocked out Tim Welch in a The Ultimate Fighter 22 bout before succumbing to Abner Lloveras in the quarterfinals of that series. Dober, meanwhile, earned a unanimous decision in a fight against Scott Holtzman las January.

Prediction: Jason Gonzalez with a second-round stoppage victory.

Travis Browne (+170) vs. Fabricio Werdum (-220)

Werdum is on a mission to reclaim the heavyweight title he lost to Stipe Miocic in UFC 198. Standing in his way back into contention is Travis Browne, whom Werdum has already beaten before, scoffing a unanimous decision over the Hawaii native two years ago. Browne has seen his luster get diminished since losing to Werdum in 2014, as that was succeeded by defeats to Andre Arlovsky and Cain Velasquez. That said, Browne remains a dangerous fighter, who is excellent in finding striking angles.  Considering his days in the UFC could be numbered with yet another loss, look for Browne to be fully motivated when he enters the octagon this Saturday.

Prediction: Browne with a split decision win.
