Betting on the Colorado Buffaloes (+4.5)
Colorado extended its winning streak to two games with an emphatic 47-6 victory over Oregon State on Saturday. It was another convincing performance by the Buffaloes who barged into the Top 25 rankings for the first time in 11 years. That’s quite a turnaround for Colorado who went 2-25 in the Pac-12 during Mike MacIntyre’s first three seasons as head coach.
Leading the way for Colorado in this victory was quarterback Steven Montez. He completed 19 of 27 passes for 293 yards and three touchdowns in the win against Oregon State. That performance comes on the heels of his 333 yard, three-score performance against Oregon the previous weekend. He’s proving to be quite a dual weapon for the Buffaloes as well, rushing for 163 yards and two touchdowns in those two games. Benefiting from Montez’ solid play is Shay Fields. He torched the Oregon State secondary, nabbing seven catches for 169 yards and three scores on Saturday.
What proved to be the difference in the contest, though, was the Buffaloes’ exemplary defense. They held the Beavers to their lowest scoring output this season. Such was the Wildcats’ defensive pressure in this game that the Beavers were held out of the end zone the entire contest. That’s the first time since Colorado’s 34-0 win at Oklahoma State back in 2005 that the Buffaloes have achieved such a defensive masterclass. The Wildcats will need to produce that same kind of defensive effort if they are to beat USC this coming weekend. The Trojans exploded for 523 total yards in their recent win against Arizona State.
The Buffaloes are 5-0 ATS this season.
Betting on the USC Trojans (-4.5)
The USC Trojans finally snapped their two-game losing skid with a resounding 41-20 victory over Arizona State on Saturday. It was a morale-boosting result for the Trojans who finally grabbed their first win in conference play this season. Providing the impetus for USC’s one-sided victory was Sam Darnold. He once and for all laid the quarterback controversy to rest, passing for 352 yards and three touchdowns in his first home start.
For the Trojans to make it back-to-back wins against Colorado, they will need to quickly establish their passing game this coming Saturday. Expected to play a crucial role this weekend is All-American wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster. He caught three touchdown passes last week against Arizona State. Smith-Schuster has formed an instant connection with Darnold, nabbing 15 catches in the past two games for 221 yards. They will have their work cut out for them, however, against a Colorado side that is ranked ninth in the nation in passing defense this campaign. The Buffaloes are allowing just 150.4 yards per game through the air this season.
That being said, the Trojans will still fancy their chances against the Buffaloes as they have fared extremely well against them of late. The Trojans are unbeaten in their last seven meetings with the Buffaloes. USC is 4-3 ATS during this span. The Trojans destroyed the Buffaloes, 56-28, in their last meeting at LA Memorial Coliseum back in 2014.
The Trojans are 2-3 ATS this season.
