Betting on the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (+25)

It’s a very stat-stuffing season for the 4-2 Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles, as they are producing great numbers on both sides of the field.

Their 40.2 points per game average ranks 21st in the country, while their 538 total YPG is fifth. The defense, on the other hand, has been able to stop offenses from converting on third down 58 times in 72 tries (80.5 percent), all while only giving up 156 passing yards per game on a 55-percent comp rate.

Head coach Jay Hopson is doing well in his first-stint as a college coach. He has guided many of his players into a very productive season, particularly the QB-RB-WR combo, with all three having significant nationwide rankings in certain stats. QB Nick Mullens’s 1,874 passing yards is seventh in the nation, WR Allen Staggers’s 25.4 yards per catch is fourth, and Ito Smith’s 711 rushing yards is eighth.

Southern Miss is 3-2 SU and ATS in its last five road games.

Betting on the LSU Tigers (-25)

The crazy season of the LSU Tigers continues. First, they shocked the world by firing longtime coach Les Miles, then feature back Leonard Fournette got hurt (knee), then they had an unannounced bye week courtesy of Hurricane Matthew.

With Fournette going down, LSU’s already-stagnant offense got even weaker. His replacement, though, sophomore Derrius Gucie, had a good game against Missouri a few weeks back (163 yards, 9.6 yards per carry, three TDs). They’ll hope he can provide the same in the coming weeks.

Their man under center, Danny Etling, meanwhile, isn’t doing a good job moving the ball through the air, only averaging 162 passing yards per game on a below-average 58-percent completion rate, along with three passing TDs and one INT.

On defense, the Tigers are performing great. Led by end Arden Key’s 7.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks, and the athletic group of secondary, the team is allowing a fifth-best 12.3 points per game. Like Southern Miss, they’re also shutting down offenses on third down, stopping them 56 times in 79 tries (71-percent success rate).

LSU has won four straight home games (2-2 ATS).

Writer’s Prediction

LSU (-13) doesn’t cover the spread, 30-20.
