Betting on the Tennessee Volunteers (-7.5)
The Vols intend to end their regular season on a high note as they take on Vanderbilt this Saturday. Tennessee is coming off an ecstatic 63-37 victory, its third straight, over Missouri last week with the team’s offense going electric.
Against the Tigers, Tennessee put up 609 total yards in an utter display of dominance on the offensive end of the field. Joshua Dobbs, playing in his final home game, went 15 of 22 fo3 223 passing yards and three touchdowns without an interception. He was uncontainable on the ground either, rushing for 190 yards and two scores on just 10 carries.
That’s the same quarterback the Commodores will have to worry about this week, though it’s best for Tennessee to have its other weapons step up. Vanderbilt’s defense is nothing to scoff at and for sure, the Commodores have a defensive plan with putting Dobbs in chains atop the priority. The backfield pair if John Kelly and Alvin Kamara definitely could help ease some pressure off Dobbs. The two combined for 156 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns in the Missouri game.
Hopefully for the Volunteers, their defense would do better this time around after letting Missouri rack up 740 total yards. Slowing down Ralph Webb is going to be critical, as the Vanderbilt running is the life of Vandy’s running game that ranks 32nd in the nation with 213.4 yards per game output.
Tennessee is 4-2 ATS in its last six road games.
Betting on the Vanderbilt Commodores (+7.5)
As implied earlier, the Commodores’ offense is largely dependent on Ralph Webb. And this coming Saturday, regardless how prepared Tennessee is for the junior running back, expect the Commodores to give Webb lots of touches.
Webb was sensational in Vandy’s 38-17 upset of Ole Miss last week, as he rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries. Tennessee is certainly bracing for Webb, but based on how the Vols have fared against the run this season, it appears as though Webb is bound for another explosion. Tennessee has the second worst rushing defense in the conference, letting opponents gash the team for 235.27 rushing yards per game.
Defensively, Vanderbilt’s plan is to limit Dobbs, which isn’t going to be easy but at least the Commodores have elite defensive pieces like Zach Cunningham and LaDarius Wiley. Cunningham leads the SEC with 109 total tackles, while Wiley has 68.
Vanderbilt is 3-1 ATS in its last four home games.
