Betting on the New York Giants (+7.5)
Although the New York Giants lost 24-19 to the Philadelphia Eagles last Thursday night, they got some help from New Orleans on Saturday and locked up a playoff spot with a Tampa Bay loss.
The G-Men are now guaranteed the fifth seed in the NFC regardless of how they’ll fare in the season finale versus the Redskins. However, they might still want to play at full strength rather than coast through the afternoon considering how badly their quarterback played against the Eagles.
Eli Manning threw a career-high 63 passes in Philly on Thursday, but only completed 38 of those attempts on his way to 356 passing yards and a touchdown. Even worse is that the two-time Super Bowl MVP threw three picks in that game and he now has six interceptions over his last four starts.
Nevertheless, Manning’s favorite target in Odell Beckham Jr. was there once again to make his struggling QB look good. Beckham had 11 catches for 140 receiving yards against the Eagles and is just four catches short of reaching 1,000 career receptions, and that milestone should signal another massive performance from OBJ indeed.
The Giants’ defense hasn’t regressed just yet either (even without injured cornerback Janoris Jenkins), as it held Philadelphia to under 300 offensive yards and just 15 first downs. They clearly could’ve easily beaten the Eagles in Week 16 if it wasn’t for Manning’s blunders on offense.
But with a trip to the Nation’s Capital this Sunday against a very desperate Washington squad, New York’s chances of ending the regular season with a ‘W’ just got bleaker, especially since the team has lost four of its last six games on the road (2-3-1 ATS).
Betting on the Washington Redskins (-7.5)
A 41-21 victory over the Chicago Bears on Saturday indicates that the Washington Redskins are not calling it quits just yet. Washington now just needs to win their regular-season finale against the Giants to secure a spot in the playoffs, partly thanks to a Dallas victory on Monday night that somehow improved their odds of making the postseason.
What a waste this season will be if the Redskins do miss out on the playoffs, especially with the banner campaign that Kirk Cousins has had. The five-year quarterback threw for 270 yards and a score on 18-of-29 passing against the Bears, and has put together his best season in the NFL hands down. He already has 4,630 passing yards this season to go with four rushing touchdowns, making him just the second QB in league history with over 4,000 passing yards and four rushing TDs in a single season.
In Saturday’s contest, Cousins even had to work without his top receiving option in tight end Jordan Reed (shoulder). And yet, Captain Kirk still easily found his two wideouts DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon, who combined for nine catches for 208 receiving yards.
In addition to Washington’s offense continuing to impress, the team’s defense also had a monster evening in Week 16 by picking off Chicago’s Matt Barkley five times. The Redskins are in the upper-half of the league when it comes to creating turnovers (22 takeaways) and they can definitely disrupt pick machine Eli Manning this Sunday. That defensive matchup is made even more intriguing with another OBJ vs. Josh Norman duel in store.
To top it all off, the Redskins have won three of their last five home games against the Giants (SU/ATS). With their playoff lives on the balance and with New York only playing for divisional bragging rights at this point, all signs point to the ‘Skins playing their hearts out and coming away with a favorable result.
Writer’s Prediction
The Redskins win, 30-24, to stay in the thick of the NFC Wild Card race, but the Giants manage to cover -7.5 at that.
