Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Columbus Blue Jackets (7:00 PM ET)
Lines: Toronto Maple Leafs (+130) at Columbus Blue Jackets (-150); total: 5.5 – View all NHL odds here
Toronto may have won three of its last five outings, but Columbus has an even better stretch of four-consecutive wins and seven victories in its last eight games.
Leading Rookie of the Year candidate Auston Matthews will look to keep his Leafs fighting hard in retaining their wild card spot for the playoffs, but the postseason-bound Blue Jackets still have the President’s Trophy in mind and will counter with a young smoking gun of their own in defenseman Zach Werenski. Werenski has two goals and nine assists this month, whereas Matthews has only put up a total of two points during that same span.
Writer’s Prediction: The Blue Jackets (-150) successfully defend their home ice with a 4-2 victory.
New York Rangers vs. New York Islanders (8:00 PM ET)
Lines: New York Rangers at New York Islanders – View all NHL odds here
Both the Rangers and the Islanders aren’t in the best of shapes heading into Wednesday’s contest; the former lost three of their last four games, while the latter has gone 1-3-1 in over the last five.
Since the Isles are still three points behind Toronto for the final wild card spot in the East and given that they’ve won six of their last seven meetings against their rivals from the Big Apple, we’re counting on them to be desperately hungry for a win.
Plus, the Rangers can afford to slack off a bit from here on out considering that they currently have a rather comfortable six-point lead between them and the first wild card team in the standings, meaning they can virtually finish the season with no worse than the fifth seed in the conference even with a fair amount of losses ahead.
Writer’s Prediction: The Islanders prevail with a much-needed win, 3-1.
Edmonton Oilers vs. Anaheim Ducks (10:00 PM ET)
Lines: Edmonton Oilers (EVEN) at Anaheim Ducks (-120); total: 5.0 – View all NHL odds here
Out of the three NHL games on Wednesday’s slate, this clash from the Pacific arguably has the biggest playoff implications.
Edmonton and Anaheim are tied at 87 points for the season and they’re both aiming for home-ice advantage in the first round of the postseason as the possible No. 4 seed in the West. The Ducks have gone a superb 5-1-1 over their last seven games, and that’s with wins over true playoff contenders in the Caps, Blackhawks and current division leaders the Sharks.
On the other hand, the boys from Alberta have been on quite a tear themselves. Edmonton is riding a four-game win streak into the Honda Center this Wednesday, with goalie Cam Talbot hot off a 2-0 shutout victory over the Kings this past Monday. It’s worth noting that it was also Talbot who was between the pipes in the Oilers’ 4-0 victory against Anaheim late in January, and that the boys from Alberta have taken two of their three head-to-head matchups against the Ducks this season.
Writer’s Prediction: The Oilers (EVEN) stay slick as they eke out a tense 3-2 road win in overtime.
