Betting on the Philadelphia Phillies (5-9)
Third-year pitcher Vince Velasquez was the Phillies’ starter in Wednesday’s 5-4 defeat to the Mets. He threw for six innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits and three walks, while only striking out two, but wasn’t credited for a loss.
The team has now lost four of the five meetings versus the Mets this season.
Philly’s current hit leader on the year, Cesar Hernandez (20-for-63, .317 BA), was blanked for only the second time this season. It was just an off-night, though, and he should be able to provide good numbers again soon enough. The rest of the team was 8-for-33, with Michael Saunders and Freddy Galvis having two hits each, to go along with an RBI and a run, respectively.
Stepping up next to the mound is Aaron Nola (1-0, 3.27 ERA). His two previous starts had him pitch a combined 11 innings, where he retired 13 batters. Additionally, the Mets’ current batters have collectively hit 8-for-20 against him, with one homer, two RBIs, and four strikeouts.
The Phillies have lost eight of their last ten games with Nola as the starting pitcher.
Betting on the New York Mets (8-7)
The aforementioned win snapped the Mets’ four-game skid. They avoided a loss that would’ve matched their longest losing streak in two years.
Robert Gsellman was serviceable in his start. Though he gave up three earned runs and six hits in seven innings, he was able to strike out seven.
The offense, meanwhile, was highlighted by Jay Bruce, who was 3-for-5 with a pair of homers; one of which resulted in a go-ahead run in the eighth inning. The veteran lefty is having a great start to the season – 17 Hs, 6 HRs, 14 RBIs, .309 BA, .387 OBP – and he is beginning to truly rise up from last season’s underwhelming production, where he regressed after joining the team via trade from the Cincinnati Reds.
Bruce is in a great position to continue his hot start. He’s pacing the team in RBIs and batting average, while tying Asdrubal Cabrera in hits and Yoenis Cespedes in homers, which are also team-leading stats.
Ace pitcher Noah Syndergaard (0-1, 0.95 ERA) is the Mets’ next starter. “Thor” has 20 strikeouts in 19 innings on the year, and he’s 4-0 with a 1.37 ERA in four career games against Philadelphia. Further, the Phillies are only batting an awful .161 against Syndergaard (10-for-62, with two homers, three walks, and 17 strikeouts).
The Mets are 8-4 in Syndergaard’s last 12 starts.
