Betting on the Chicago White Sox (45-72)
If the White Sox are not getting pummeled, they are choking. Wednesday night’s 5-4 defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers played as such, as they were about to snap consecutive blowout losses but went on to blow a two-run lead in the 9th inning. It was their fourth-straight L.
Second-year pitcher Reynaldo Lopez is the projected starter for the series-opener. The 23-year-old was 5-3 in 11 appearances with the Washington Nationals last season, and he just had his White Sox debut this past Friday. In there, he gave up two runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out six (six innings). He did not factor in the decision.
The offense will be able to rely on a list of guys. Leury Garcia, Avisail Garcia, and Nicky Delmonico are all hitting above .300 in the past week, and in the same span, Jose Abreu and Tim Anderson are combining for six home runs and 11 RBIs.
The White Sox lead the season-series, 2-1.
Betting on the Texas Rangers (59-60)
Following the 12-6 win over the Detroit Tigers Wednesday night, the Rangers have now won six of their last seven games. A wildcard spot is still ways away with the New York Yankees still ahead by five games, but it’s good that they are getting wins while there’s time remaining.
With that, Thursday’s scheduled starter, Tyson Ross, is probably going to make a lot of palms sweaty. The seven-year pro is 3-2 in eight starts, but has an appalling 7.11 ERA on the year, which includes giving up eight runs on eight hits and nine walks in his last two games (9.1 innings). He was also the starter in the Rangers’ 6-5 loss to the White Sox last July 2nd, where he was responsible for four of the opposition’s six runs.
Batting-wise, though, there’s an array of hitters that can be relied upon. Adrian Beltre and Nomar Mazara are blazing hot in the past week, collectively going 21-for-44 (.472) with 13 RBIs, while Rougned Odor and Elvis Andrus are 9-for-24 with three homers and seven RBIs in their three previous meetings with the White Sox.
Writer’s Prediction
The Rangers (-160) should be able to get this win and tie the season-series.
